Level Placement

If you are coming from another school, and you are not sure which level to sign up to, you can come to Level Placement, where you will have a little chat and dance with our teachers, who will help you choose the right level.

Level Placement will be held on:

  • Monday the 23rd of October at 17.30

Intense Track Auditions

The Intense Track is our nerdy track, for dancers with min. 12 months of swing dance experience. If you want to sign up to the Intense Track for the first time, you need to audition first to be able to join the class.

The audition will be held on:

  • Monday the 23rd of October at 17.30

More info about the auditions

Audition

To ensure a high level, all new participants will have to do a short audition to be accepted.

How will it work?

Each person wanting to audition will take turns dancing with a teacher and will afterwards be told if they fit into the intense track. The audition will be short, about 5 min per person, and will take place in a separate room from the open social dance, which will be taking place in the main dance hall.

Is it necessary to register for the audition?

No. You just show up. Solo followers might want to register for the class even before the audition, since there is no promise of a spot in the class, even if you get a Yes in the audition. If you register and pay, but are later turned down at the audition, you will of course receive a full refund, or you can choose to transfer your money to another course.

I took part in the audition last round. Do I need to audition again?

No. Once you have passed the audition to the Intense Track, you don’t have to audition again.

Swing 1 (Beginners Course)

Description
Swing 1 is a course for complete beginners. So if you have never danced before, or you have tried some other dances, but not swing, this is a class for you.

The class material is build according to the way swing dance has evolved back at the beginning of the 20th century. In the Swing 1 course we will focus on the first two types of footwork that emerged in the 1910s and 1920s: groove walks and 20s Charleston. We will teach you some basic 6-count moves, as well as 20s Charleston variations. Then we will move towards 1930s, when swing dancers started using tripple steps.

We will also introduce you to the concept of leading and following in a dance, and what it means to "go social dancing".

Level Guidance
You don't need any prior dance experience to join this class.

Swing 2

Description
Swing 2 is a continuation from the Swing 1 course. We will keep on working on the basic moves and techniques, and we will introduce a new type of footwork: the 8 count. The main focus of this course will be on learning the famous Swingout. We will also teach you how to switch between 6-count and 8-count moves, and how to integrate them into your dancing.  You will also learn the 30s Charleston (the "evolved" version of 20s Charleston, with kicks)

Level guidance
You need to complete the Swing 1 course to be able to join this class. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 2 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class. (e.g. completed level Newcomers in SwingShoes, or completed Level 2 in Hepcats)

Swing 3

Description
Swing 3 is a continuation from the Swing 2 course. We will add more 8 count moves (e.g. Outside Turn, Texas Tommy), and styling variations (e.g. Swivels). We will teach you how to do the 6-count moves, which you have previously learned, with the more fast-paced and energetic kick steps. You will also be introduced to Tandem Charleston and its basic variations.

Level guidance
You need to complete the Swing 2 course to be able to join this class. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 4 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class. (e.g. completed level Beginners A in SwingShoes, or completed Level 3 in Hepcats)

Swing 4

Description
Swing 4 is a continuation from the Swing 3 course. From this level and up, the class material becomes more open and is adjusted to the needs of the class participants. The main points of focus will be spins and  turns, frame exercises and footwork variations.

Level guidance
You need to complete the Swing 3 course to be able to join this class. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 6 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class. (e.g. completed level Beginners B in SwingShoes, or completed Level 3 in Hepcats)

Swing 5

Description
Swing 5 is a continuation from the Swing 4 course. The class material doesn't follow a fixed curriculum, instead it is adjusted to the needs of the class participants. The main points of focus will be connection exercises,  musicality and adding solo jazz variations to your partner dancing.

Level guidance
You need to complete the Swing 4 course to be able to join this class. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 8 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class. (e.g. completed level Beginners Intermediate A in SwingShoes, or at least one round on Level 4 in Hepcats)

Theme Track

Theme TrackDescription
Each round there will be a different theme on this level. In Round 6 there will be two Theme Track classes to choose between:

1) Musicality & Creativity (on Mondays)
In the 7 weeks of classes we will touch on all the different aspects of Musicality. The participants will learn how to create improvisations on the fly and allow their dancing to be inspired by the music. We will teach you how to think of yourself as one of the musicians in the band, which will help you adapt your dance to fit the theme and style of the music.

2) Role Swapping (on Tuesdays)
Leading and following are completely different experiences, both roles having their own unique challenges and joys. In this course you get to try the other side of the equation, allowing you to get a better understanding of the dance as a whole. The course is only for people who already have a good understanding of either leading or following and who want to try to swap roles. So while everyone will be new to their roles, the course will progress a lot faster than a normal beginner’s class, since rhythm and connection techniques will be concepts familiar to everyone participating.

Level guidance
You don’t have to audition for this class, but you need to complete the Swing 5 course to be able to join. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 10 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class. (e.g. completed level Beginners Intermediate B in SwingShoes, or at least two rounds on Level 4 in Hepcats)

Intense Track

Intense TrackDescription
The Intense Track is our nerdy track, with fewer moves and more technique. Participants will be asked to work on material between classes (homework). At least once during each round we have a Personal Feedback class, where the students are asked to film each other and give each other feedback on a given technique.

The content of this course is partly shaped by the students. At the beginning of each round we ask the students what techniques and moves they would like to work on, and we incorporate their wishes into the course material.

Level guidance
You need to complete at least one round of Theme Track before auditioning for the Intense Track. If you are a fast learner, you can try to audition directly after finishing the Swing 5 course.
If you come from another school, you need to have at least 12 months of swing dance experience to be able to go to the audition. (e.g. completed level Intermediate in SwingShoes, or at least one round on Level 5 in Hepcats).

Invitational

Invitational TrackDescription
The invitational class is a high level class for the most skilled dancers. To join this class you should have several years of experience and have worked hard on improving your dancing - a Lindy Hop addict. The class will be kept small to enable the teachers to really work with the individual students. Additionally, the teachers will join the rotation to dance with the students in order to give direct feedback every class. This class is also meant to be an offer for the teachers group of Happy Feet Studio, who will be joining the class to expand their vocabulary.

Level guidance
This is the highest level of classes in Happy Feet Studio. We recommend taking at least one round of classes on the Intense Track before signing up for the Invitational level.
There is no audition to this class. Instead, you can apply to join the class. The teachers of Happy Feet studio, as well as any students who have been accepted, will then vote on who to invite in to the class. This way it’s always the students in the class who have the final word on who they want to have in the class.

Level Structure
decorative-line-black-png-picture

Level Guidelines

• From Swing 1 to Swing 5, you take each level for one round (7 weeks), and then you move to the next level

• On lower levels (Swing 1 - Swing 3) there are several groups to choose between - with the same material, just on different days. Choose the one that fits your schedule best.

• Feel like you need more repetition? You can always take the same level again

• If you have had a break in taking classes for 4 months or more, you must repeat the level you have been on before the break, to ensure that you can follow the classes.

• When you finish Swing 5, you can choose between Theme Track (lots of moves and variations) or Intense Track (focus on technique). You stay on this level for a few rounds, but you can switch between tracks each round (or take both tracks)

FAQ

Do I need a dance partner?
No, you don't. Lindy Hop is a social dance, where we dance with different partners  - that's also what makes it so much fun! In class we rotate partners, so that everyone has a chance to meet each other and dance a lot.

A little tip though: since this is a partner dance we need to balance the number of leaders and followers ( traditionally leaders are men and followers women. However, in these modern times we welcome anyone to pick whichever role they prefer). We typically have many more followers than leads, so if you choose to be a follower we recommend that you sign-up with a partner to avoid the waiting list.

Do you offer single classes/tryout classes?
We don't offer sign ups for single classes to our weekly classes. We need to make sure that our classes are well balanced, so that there is an equal or almost equal amount of followers and leaders (where leaders are usually men and followers are women). Sign ups for single classes would disrupt our leader-follower balance. Therefore it is only possible to sign up for a full round of classes (7 weeks of classes).

If you want to see how we teach and how our studio looks like before you sign up for one of our courses, you can come to one of our Friday Parties, which take place in our studio every second/third week. There is an Intro Class to swing dancing right before each party. You don't need to sign up beforehand, just show up on the day and pay the entrance to the party at the door. For more information on Friday Parties, check our Event section.

Do you teach in Danish or English?
We teach in English because our classes have dancers from all over the world. However, you are welcome to ask questions and speak to us in Danish.
What should I wear?
Anything that you feel comfortable in that doesn't limit your movement. We suggest bringing some extra clothes to change into after class - Lindy Hop is an energetic dance, so you might get sweaty. We have a Shower Area in our studio, where you can take a shower and change clothes before or after class.
Regarding footwear, flat shoes will be the best choice, preferably with a not-too-sticky sole. We do not recommend high heels for beginners.  If you want to invest in some good dancing shoes, try these brands: Keds, Aris Allen, Toms, Dance Joy.
What if I miss some classes?
Don't worry if you happen to miss a class or two. We do a recap after all our classes. which students are welcome to film and share with each other. You should be able to get the video from your classmates and practice the moves.

If you feel like you have missed out on too many classes, and you are having trouble catching up with the new material, you can:
• book a private lesson with us, where we will work one-to-one with you on the material. Check our Private Lessons section for more info.
• sign up for the same level again in the next round of classes. It will give you a chance to recap the material you've  learned, and catch up with the things you missed.

Regarding refunds: Once the course has begun, we do not offer refunds for any missed classes.

Can I get a refund/sell my registration?
You can have your registration refunded, if you write us latest one week before classes start, after which we do not offer refunds. You may sell your registration to someone else. All we need is an email from you, with their name and email included. Please note: It is not possible to change the follow/lead role of your original registration.
Where can I dance Lindy Hop outside of classes?

Friday Parties at Happy Feet Studio
(every second/third week)

Great evenings of dancing and hanging out in in the home of happy feet! Each party starts with an Intro Class to swing dance. After that, the dancefloor is open, and we have plenty of special attractions prepared for you, making each party different and unique.
From time to time there will be live music, dance competitions, dance shows, quizes, intro classes in blues/shag/balboa, and much more. There is also a cozy bar where you can buy drinks and hang out with your friends in between dances.
Get more info about Friday Parties here.

Open Practice in Happy Feet Studio
(almost every day)

You can come to Open Practice in our studio up to three times a week, to practice moves from your class or just dance with your friends. You might want to bring a partner to dance with, but otherwise the dancefloor is open, and the music is playing, so just show up and dance! Open Practice is free and open for everyone, no sign up needed.
