Swing into Summer with Jo Hoffberg

Renowned Swing dance instructor Jo Hoffberg is coming to Copenhagen!
Jo will be teaching two days of workshops in Happy Feet Studio on July 1st and 2nd and we couldn’t be more excited!
Saturday will be all about Lindy Hop, with Kuno joining as teaching assistant to Jo as she shares complex and exciting partner dancing ideas.
Sunday will be a Solo Dancing day, open to all levels. Here you will work on your quality of movement and confidence in improvisation – all central to developing yourself as a swing dancer.
If you are not familiar with Jo Hoffberg, just put her name into Youtube and you will quickly get a sense of her long and glorious dance career.

Workshop Overview

Please note: All workshops are open for all levels. There will be a choose-your-own-challenge aspect to the teaching material and the concepts and ideas shared will be interesting to explore for dancers of all levels.

SATURDAY, July 1st

✤ Lindy Hop: Trading Eights – Partnered ✤

Time: 10.00 – 12.30 (2h 30min)
Description: This super fun class will take your partner connection to a new level through a more open communication. Both Leaders and Followers will recalibrate how they are “listening” and “speaking.” This class with cover partner dynamics, frame, and musicality.
Requirements: Dancers need to be comfortable with Swing outs, circles, tuck turns, and passby’s.
• 12.30 – 13.30: Lunch break (60 min) •

✤ Lindy Hop: One Rhythm – Partnered ✤

Time: 13.30 – 16.00 (2h 30min)
Description: Using common rhythms, this class will focus on connection and quality of movement. It’s about the individual within the partnership. This class is “simple” in concept and is as challenging (and as fun) as you make it. Let’s dance!!

SUNDAY, July 2nd

✤ Foundations of Improvisation – Solo dance ✤

Time: 10.00 – 12.30 (2h 30min)
Description: This class is all about getting comfortable moving your body using a few simple ideas as inspiration. By the end of this class, you’ll be comfortable playing with a number of classic jazz steps by using isolations, rhythms, and accents.
• 12.30 – 13.30: Lunch break (60 min) •

✤ From Drills to Improv – Solo dance ✤

Time: 13.30 – 16.00 (2h 30min)
Description: Now that you’re comfortable moving your body, we’ll talk about what it means to be connected to the music, how to practice being present, and how this creates space for an amazing conversation! We’ll start with solo drills and then explore how to dance with these ideas. This class will be as challenging as you make it 😃
Requirement: To attend this workshop, you must also have attended the solo workshop earlier in the same day, since this workshop builds on the concepts shared here.

More about Jo Hoffberg

Jo Hoffberg is a bigwig and longtime fixture of the Lindy Hop scene. She holds first place titles from the American Lindy Hop Championships, Canadian Swing Championships, International Lindy Hop Championships, European Swing Dance Championships, National Jitterbug Championships, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, and U.S. Open Swing Dance Championships.
Since 2007, Jo has traveled the world spreading jazz culture through vintage partner dancing and has taught and performed in 28 countries across 5 continents. She teaches vernacular jazz, charleston, aerials, and lindy hop.
She hosts intensives in Europe and North America, has produced an extensive online learning library, is a co-producer of Swing Break Mexico, the head judge at the Balkan Lindy Hop Championships, and runs a personalized Online Training Programs for competitors around the world.
Inducted into the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame in 2013, Jo is a passionate and avid dancer, instructor, and competitor.
