Level Description

Swing 2

Description
Swing 2 is a continuation from the Swing 1 course (Beginners Course). We will keep on working on the basic moves and techniques, and we will introduce a new type of footwork: the 8 count. The main focus of this course will be on learning the famous Swingout. We will also teach you how to switch between 6-count and 8-count moves in both groove-walk and triple step rhythm, and how to integrate them into your dancing. You will also learn the 30s Charleston (the "evolved" version of 20s Charleston, with kicks), and its basic variations, such as Kick-Through and Hand-to-Hand.

Level guidance
You need to complete the Swing 1 course to be able to join this class. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 2 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class.

We will introduce fast turns on the spot for both followers and leaders. We will teach you how to do the 6-count moves, which you have previously learned, with the more fast-paced and energetic kick steps. You will also be introduced to Tandem Charleston and its basic variations.

Level guidance
You need to complete the Swing 2 course to be able to join this class. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 4 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class.

Swing 4

Description
Swing 4 is a continuation from the Swing 3 course. From this level and up, the class material becomes more open and is adjusted to the needs of the class participants. You will learn more swingout variations (e.g. Texas Tommy), more 30s Charleston variations (e.g. S-turn to Tandem Charleston),  as well as turns with traveling in both triple step and Groove-Walk rhythm. You will also learn how to spice up your footwork with small variations.

Level guidance
You need to complete the Swing 3 course to be able to join this class. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 6 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class.

Swing 5

Description
Swing 5 is a continuation from the Swing 4 course. The class material on this level is more open and it is adjusted to the needs of the class participants. You will learn some of the more complex moves, such as: Sugar Push, Sailor Step, Barrel Roll, and Airplane Charleston. The main points of focus will be connection exercises, turning technique and footwork variations.

Level guidance
You need to complete the Swing 4 course to be able to join this class. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 8 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class.

Swing 6 - Theme (see themes here)

Description
Swing 6 - Theme is a continuation from the Swing 5 course. It is a course for dancers on an intermediate level, who want to expand their vocabulary of moves and techniques.  You are expected to stay on this level for at least a few rounds of classes before moving on to a higher level. To keep the classes fresh and interesting, each round will have a different theme, always with new moves and variations.

Themes in Round 2, 2023 (March - May):

Swing 6 Monday with Kuno & Malene: Classic Lindy Hop

Join Kuno and Malene for a round of "Oldies but Goodies", where they will share their favourite classic Lindy Hop material with you.
In the course you will learn some of the most iconic Lindy Hop ever danced, such as: The Mini Dip, Scissor Kicks, The Chase, The Hacksaw and many more.
We will focus on material well known in Lindy Hop communities around the world and which we believe should be known by anyone calling themselves an experienced Lindy Hopper.
So come join us for a fun round of classes fully packed with great dancing from the golden days of Lindy Hop.

Swing 6 Wednesday with Rui & Namiko: Musicality

During this course we will touch on the many different aspects of Musicality.
We will listen to different sub-genres of swing music and will learn how to adapt our dancing to them.

Together we will explore the different options we have as dancers, when connecting to the music - when and how to add specific elements to your dancing that match the music, e.g. lindy hop variations, hitting musical elements, breakaways.

We will work on how and when to give and take space when dancing.
You will learn to broaden your musical expression while dancing, e.g. using different body parts, rhythm, energy and how to balance being predictable and inspiring with your partner.
If you want to connect more to the music in your dancing, this is the course for you!

Level guidance
You don’t have to audition for this class, but you need to complete the Swing 5 course to be able to join. If you come from another school, you need to have at least 10 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class.

Swing 7

Description
Swing 7 is a class for experienced dancers, where we focus mainly on technique and quality of the dance.
The content of this course is partly shaped by the students. At the beginning of each round the teachers ask the students what techniques and moves they would like to work on, and they incorporate the wishes into the course material.

Level guidance
You need to complete at least one round of Swing 6 - Theme before moving up to Swing 7. If you are a fast learner, you can try to move up directly after Swing 5.

If you come from another school, we recommend that you have at least 12 months of swing dance experience to be able to join this class.

Obligatory Level Placement for new participants
To ensure a high level in class, all new participants will have to come to Level Placement first, to be accepted to the course. Once you have been accepted, you can continue taking classes on this level in the future rounds as well, without having to come to Level Placement again.

Read more in the Level Placement section in the right column (or below this text on mobile version).

Swing 8

Description
Swing 8 is the highest level in Happy Feet Studio. It is dedicated to experienced and skilled dancers, who want to keep on improving their dancing - the Lindy Hop addicts. You will work on challenging moves and concepts, with a lot of focus on technique.

The content of this course is partly shaped by the students. At the beginning of each round the teachers ask the students what techniques and moves they would like to work on, and they incorporate the wishes into the course material.

Level guidance
This is the highest level of classes in Happy Feet Studio. We recommend taking at least two rounds of classes on Swing 7 before signing up for Swing 8.

Obligatory Level Placement for new participants
To ensure a high level in class, all new participants will have to come to Level Placement first, to be accepted to the course. Once you have been accepted, you can continue taking classes on this level in the future rounds as well, without having to come to Level Placement again.

Frequently Asked Questions

what level should i choose?
If you are coming from another school or if you had a longer break and you are not sure what level to choose, you can come to our Level Placement, where you can dance with a teacher and get advice.
We organize Level Placement before each round of classes, and the dates are announced here on the page approx. 3 weeks before classes start.
Read more about Level Placement here.
Do I need a dance partner?

You don't need a partner to register. If you register alone, we will simply pair you up with another participant. We will also have partner rotation in the classes, so you will get to meet and dance with other people in the class. A nice way to make new friends!

A little tip though: since this is a partner dance, we need to balance the number of leaders and followers (traditionally leaders are men and followers women. However, in these modern times we welcome anyone to pick whichever role they prefer). We typically have many more followers than leaders, so if you choose to be a follower, we recommend that you sign-up with a partner to avoid the waiting list.

Do you offer single classes / tryout classes?
We organize Intro Classes to Swing Dancing during our Friday Parties, which take place in our studio every second/third week. You don't need to sign up beforehand, just show up on the day and pay the entrance to the party at the door. The intro class takes place right before the party. For more information on that, check our Friday Party section.

You can also join an intro class to swing dance in Student House on Tuesdays. See more info about it here.

We don't offer sign ups for single classes to our weekly classes. We need to make sure that our classes are well balanced, so that there is an equal or almost equal amount of followers and leaders (where leaders are usually men and followers are women). Sign ups for single classes would disrupt our leader-follower balance. Therefore it is only possible to sign up for a full round of classes (7 to 8 weeks of classes).

Do you teach in Danish or English?
We teach in English because our classes have dancers from all over the world. However, you are welcome to ask questions and speak to us in Danish.
What should I wear?
Anything that you feel comfortable in that doesn't limit your movement. We suggest bringing some extra clothes to change into after class - Lindy Hop is an energetic dance, so you might get sweaty. We have a Shower Area in our studio, where you can take a shower and change clothes before or after class.
Regarding footwear, flat shoes will be the best choice, preferably with a not-too-sticky sole. We do not recommend high heels for beginners. If you want to invest in some good dancing shoes, try these brands: Keds, Aris Allen, Toms, Dance Joy.
What if I miss some classes?
Don't worry if you happen to miss a class or two. We do a recap after all our classes. which students are welcome to film and share with each other. You should be able to get the video from your classmates and practice the moves.

If you feel like you have missed out on too many classes, and you are having trouble catching up with the new material, you can:
• book a private lesson with us, where we will work one-to-one with you on the material. Check our Private Lessons section for more info.
• sign up for the Beginners Course again. It will give you a chance to recap the material you've learned, and catch up with the things you missed.

Regarding refunds: Once the course has begun, we do not offer refunds for any missed classes.

Can I get a refund / sell my registration?
You can have your registration refunded, if you write us latest 5 days (120 hours) before a course it set to begin. Any cancellation later than this, no matter the reason, does not resolve in any refund. Read more about our refund policy here.
You may sell your registration to someone else. All we need is an email from you, with their name and email included. Please note: It is not possible to change the follow/lead role of your original registration.
Am I too old/too young to dance swing?
Swing dancing is for everyone, regardless of age. In Copenhagen you can meet swing dancers from every age group, having lots of fun together on the dance-floor. That said, you must be at least 15 years old to join our classes, due to legal regulations. We do not however have a maximum age limit. 🙂
Where can I dance outside of classes?

Friday Parties at Happy Feet Studio
(every second/third week)

Great evenings of dancing and hanging out in in the home of happy feet! Each party starts with an Intro Class to swing dance. After that, the dancefloor is open, and we have plenty of special attractions prepared for you, making each party different and unique.
From time to time there will be live music, dance competitions, dance shows, quizes, intro classes in blues/shag/balboa, and much more. There is also a cozy bar where you can buy drinks and hang out with your friends in between dances.
Get more info about Friday Parties here.

Open Practice in Happy Feet Studio
(almost every day)

You can come to Open Practice in our studio up to three times a week, to practice moves from your class or just dance with your friends. Days and times are a bit different each round of classes, depending on the room availability.
You might want to bring a partner to dance with, but otherwise the dancefloor is open, and the music is playing, so just show up and dance! Open Practice is free and open for everyone, no sign up needed.
