Summer workshops - week 1

Workshop descriptions

Date: Monday, 1st of July

Time: 17.30 – 19.30

Teachers: Xavier & Christine

Price: 250kr

Description: The 1952 musical-comedy Singin’ in the Rain, has often been called the world’s best musical. Originally, the song is from 1929 and is a Broadway swing tune that has been included in all kinds of contexts and also earned a 3rd place among the 100 most important songs in 100 years.

In the Swing era, musical artists could swing, tap dance and sing – AT THE SAME TIME. In this workshop you have the chance to be a musical performer for one night and do the whole “shebang”; singing and dancing all at once.

In a fun and relaxed atmosphere, you will learn to sing the legendary Singin’ in the Rain song and how to work with swing phrasing. You will also learn some simple soft-shoe tap steps and how to swing your umbrella in rhythm with your steps.

If you have a long umbrella, preferably one with a round bended shaft for holding it, do bring it! But don’t worry if you don’t have this exact umbrella, you can still join the workshop of course!

Level:
Singing level: Everyone is welcome, from complete beginners to experienced singers.
Dancing level: Having taken at least one course in swing/tap dancing is recommended but people of all levels can join.

Date: Tuesday, 2nd of July

Teachers: Sandrine & Johan

Time: 19.00 – 21.00

Price: 250kr

Description: Lindy hop is a rhytmical dance, made up of classic footwork rhythms like the standard 6-count and 8-count patterns that you are probably familiar with. In this workshop, you will learn to dance Lindy Hop with completely new rhythms, which will help you be more playful and creative in your dancing and take your Lindy Hop to new rhythmical heights!

Level: Open level. You just need to know how to do triple steps and have tried some 6-count lindy variations.

Date: Wednesday 3rd of July

Teacher: Lara

Time: 18.00-20.00

Price: 250kr

Description: Welcome to the Followers Only Balboa workshop, where all the focus is on you, followers, without partners. During the workshop we will elaborate on applying new rhythms to known figures. As you don’t need a partner, you will have time to focus on your own needs and likes. You will be introduced to specific footwork, which will function as a base for your own exploration and playfulness in the future. Lara will prepare a program, but you are encouraged to prepare questions and frustrations you would like Lara to address – these can be emailed directly to us beforehand if you’d like.

Level: You can attend the workshop if you attended Bal Lab class at Happy Feet Studio this round or if you are comfortable with dancing Balboa on your own without a partner (besides basics, you know how to enter and exit Lollies, Swivels, Throw Out, and Out & Ins).

Date: Thursday 4th of July

Teachers: Niomi & Patricia

Time: 17.30-19.30

Price: 250kr

Description: Leading and following are completely different experiences, both roles having their own unique challenges and joys. In this workshop you get to try the other side of the equation, allowing you to get a better understanding of the dance as a whole.

The workshop is only for people who already have a good understanding of either leading or following and who want to try to swap roles. So while everyone will be new to their roles, the course will progress a lot faster than a normal beginners workshop, since rhythm and connection techniques will be concepts familiar to everyone participating.

Level: Swing 5 and up (or min. 10 months of swing dance experience).

Date: Thursday 4th of July

Teacher: Jordan

Time: 20:00-21:30

Price: 190kr

Description: Light-hearted, high-spirited, and full of dance joy, this class is built to accommodate both total beginners as well as dancers with a bit more experience. In the workshop you will be dancing old school Solo Jazz, which is built upon the African American dance tradition from the 1920’s until the 1940’s and we’ll be dancing it to wonderful big band swing music from the same era. You will be dancing solo and at the same time in a group with many other dancers. Solo and yet together, you can immerse yourselves into the extraordinary feelings the jam circle can provide.

Level: Open level (dancers of all levels are welcome).
